We invite you to Steve Buck: Late Works, an exhibition of ceramics by a maker who spent nearly four decades in this very building.

Steve Buck (1949–2021) had a studio at Kingsgate Workshops from 1983 to 2021 and it feels entirely right that his work should return here.

He graduated from the Harrow Ceramics course in 1981 and became one of Britain’s most distinctive vessel makers. Continually setting himself new technical and conceptual challenges, he produced numerous distinctive bodies of work rooted in a sustained engagement with material, form and perception, with work held in collections including the V&A, the Crafts Council, and the Musée Ariana in Geneva.

The works on show, have dry, tactile surfaces built from subtle blends of clay, sitting in striking contrast to the dark glazes or luminous, shimmering interiors within. For Buck, the vessel was one of the purest sculptural forms — a way of thinking about space, containment, and what lies beneath the surface.
