Tuesday 14 June, 7.00PM | Goldsmiths College London Professor Stuart Hall Building LG01 FREE ENTRY TO ALL This film screening brings together a selection of short films from Lucy Beech and Rob Crosse, followed by a Q&A with the artists. The films presented interrogate our inherent human desire for emotional support. Focusing on collective and ritualistic group activities, and the ways in which we might attempt to operate as agents for one another’s experiences. Beech and Crosse both ask questions about the construction of self-identity and the role of the individual in relation to the group. The films draw on our haptic sensibilities whilst creating a space for embodiment and empathy. Beech’s work explores different models of emotional labour and structures of public intimacy, blurring the boundaries between private and public, work and play. Using these strategies as a tool of fiction, Beech sets a context to ask wider questions about structures of control, competitiveness and hierarchies of vulnerability. Crosse’s main focus is time(lessness); the breaking down and failure of our bodies with age, mirrored against the backdrop of anachronistic technologies. Mourning becomes the key feature that subtly binds these works together. The performativity of loss is played out, not vicariously (through the grieving of an other, for example a lost loved one) but rather self-reflexively, through the grieving of one’s younger body and many previous identities. Recent solo exhibitions include James Fuentes, New York; The Tetley, Leeds; and the Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston (all 2015). Group exhibitions include Lisson Gallery, London, (2015) and ICA, London, (2014). Her video work has been screened at Tate Britain, London; CCA, Glasgow, Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham; Whitechapel Gallery, London (all 2015); GAK, Bremen and Chisenhale Gallery, London (2013). She was artist in residence alongside her collaborator Edward Thomasson at Site Gallery, Sheffield (2016); other recent collaborative performance works include: Maureen Paley, London (2016); Frieze Live, London (2015); Camden Art Centre, London (2014); and Tent Rotterdam, Rotterdam (2014).
