ALIMENTARI | Lauren Godfrey | Curated by Alice Bygraves at Geddes Gallery 9 - 19 June 2016

ALIMENTARI Lauren Godfrey Curated by Alice Bygraves 9 – 19 June 2016 Private view: 9 June 2016 6 - 9pm _____________________________________________________ Lauren Godfrey’s latest exhibition spanning sculpture, window vinyl and film continues to riff on Italian dining in perhaps its most fitting context to date – the former site of KC Continental Stores. Godfrey’s work draws powerful influences from Italian culture and history, incorporating a strong regard for the history of Italian design, particularly Ettore Sottsass and Gio Ponti among others. The work is materially and conceptually driven by signifiers of Italy; pasta, marble, language, a feeling of grandeur and sensuality.

In this exhibition, sculptures sit on the shelves of a former Italian deli depicting the ingredients which once stood in their place. Evoking the tastes, textures and smells of food in Italy, the work confronts relationships between food and language using the rules surrounding pasta shapes as a parallel to those used in grammar. Considering foodstuffs as signifiers for gesture, the artist suggests a parallel between the words that come out of the mouth and the food that goes in. __

Geddes Gallery is run by Alice Bygraves and Cornelia Marland. The gallery space was originally the much loved Italian deli, K C Continental, run by Leo Giordani, for 50 years until May 2015 when he retired. Since opening in May 2015, the gallery has held over 30 exhibitions and events. The summer exhibition programme runs to July 2016.
