OPEN CALL - Artist Residency, Kingsgate Project Space

 OPEN CALL 2019 - 2020

Kingsgate Project Space is recruiting a new series of studio residencies for artists at key stages in their career with a special focus on recent graduates.

Residencies will provide artists with the opportunity to develop a new body of work to be presented in a solo exhibition or similar at Kingsgate Project Space. Selected artists are encouraged to think about their exhibitions as an extension of the studio residency rather than as its culmination. This is a research and experimental residency rather than a production based one; with a focus on discussion, collaboration and experimentation.

As part of the residency each artist will receive:

  • 6 – 9 month studio residency*

  • Free and private studio space (approx. 17sqm, with 24hr access) within a busy complex of studios and workshops

  • £500 bursary

  • Mentoring support from curators, peers, artists and other visiting arts professionals

  • Support in the delivery of an exhibition and/or series of events 3-9 months after the conclusion of the residency

We welcome applications from artists who have graduated within the last five years from either graduate or postgraduate education institutions (including alternative art schools such as Syllabus, School for the Damned and others). There are no age restrictions, and applicants need not have recently completed their studies if a suitable case can be made why this is the right time to benefit from this opportunity.

This opportunity is not open to artists who are currently undertaking an undergraduate, post graduate or equivalent programme. We accept applications from collaborative artists or collectives, although the funding awards cannot be increased to reflect the number of participant artists. A selection committee will consider the applications and create a short-list of suitable candidates to be invited to interview.

Kingsgate Project Space has been running a residency programme for seven years with past alumni including Lauren Godfrey, Rob Crosse, Victoria Adam, Oscar Murillo and Evan Ifekoya.

* The duration of the residency is flexible and will be between 6 to 9 months. This is to be negotiated between the Curator and selected artists.

About us

Kingsgate Project Space is part of Kingsgate Workshops – a studio provider for creative practitioners working in a range of mediums from ceramics and glass, to bookbinding and printing. Applications can be made for artists to benefit from the skills and activities that take place here in our studios – ceramics; furniture making; etching; basket weaving; etc. – thought this is not essential.

At Kingsgate Project Space, we work with artists to devise exhibitions that are open-ended and exploratory in nature. We are interested in placing early practice in conversation with established practice. This approach has led us to show works by Ima-Abasi Okon, Alessandro Raho, Leon Kossoff, Jacqui Hallum, Caroline Achaintre, Lucy Stein… among many others.

Testimonials

It feels like the residency came at the perfect time; I had just finished studying and was able to go straight into this new opportunity, experiment with a new medium and tap into the knowledge of the ceramist [Chris Bramble]. It offered support, a space for studio visits to continue seamlessly after graduating and being able to develop new work led to shows in Amsterdam, London and Bern.

Victoria Adam, artist-in-residence (2015)

[The exhibition opening] was such a good evening, and more generally I had a great time being here and being able to work so focused on my thing!!! It was really an amazing experience for me to work with the Kingsgate team.

Leonie Nagel, artist-in-residence (2017)

While smaller and mid-sized commercial galleries struggle to find the elusive ‘new models’ for renting and exhibiting, London’s studio project spaces like ASC, Assembly Point, Cell, Cubitt and Kingsgate Workshops are taking up the slack in providing the ambitious and experimental exhibitions the city needs.
