Kingsgate Gallery present, Dubbing Light, an exhibition in two parts - go from colour/black white grey-, a collaboration between artists Aya Fukami and Caroline McCambridge. Dubbing light may be seen as an extension of the artists’ work, the process of installing and working collaboratively as they consider the role of colour and the monochrome in their work. Fukami and McCambridge have conceived of this show as a piece of work in and of itself, coming from their own separate practices which are grounded in process and experimentation as a mode of making and knowledge gathering. The gallery space becomes an active site for improvisation and experimentation echoing their individual processes. They will create an evolving show, which will begin with colour-based work (Feb 12th- 22nd) and change to monochromatic pieces in the second week (Feb 26th – Feb 28th). Both artists work in an open playful exploration of sensing and responding to disparate materials and forms, which are altered, transformed, juxtaposed. This poetic play sometimes hints at a narrative but always retains an ambiguity, a level of opacity. While the approach to making work is improvisational there is a constant tension between the keeping-open of possibilities and the need to make decisions. The provisional quality of the apparently contingent assemblages suggests a flux, a possibility of change while the paintings and collage require a final decision. The temporary nature of sculptures acts as a foil to the ‘finished-ness’ of the two dimensional work. On Sat 28th Feb at 2.30pm you are invited to join the artists Fukami and McCambridge who will be in conversation with Artist Film Maker / Lecturer and founder of Captcha Project Space (www.captcha.org.uk) Stephen Hall. |

Kingsgate Gallery presented Basketry Nation, an exhibition showcasing work by the Tuesday afternoon
basketry class at Kingsgate Community Centre in Kilburn, London. This class evolved out of an Arts
Council funded 6-week project in 2000 initiated by the then Education Officer at Kingsgate Workshops
Trust, Rehana Mughal, and basketmaker Polly Pollock.
The work in this exhibition is by the current class, many of whom have been coming for five years or
more, and who have formed a stable and supportive group in addition to acquiring the skills to produce
very exciting basketry to a high standard. Several of the exhibitors have gone on to study on the highly
regarded basketry courses at the City Lit in Covent Garden, London, including the 2 year City &
Guilds qualification.
Adult workshop with basket maker Ann Nazareth, 14th March, 11.00 – 5.00pm

Kingsgate Gallery, in Kingsgate Road, NW6 is the venue for the second exhibition, 17-25 April, of an international group of artists working at the Byam Shaw School of Art, Archway. The gallery offers an exciting challenge to the group to tailor their diverse approaches ‘within limits’ offered by the form and shape of Kingsgate’s dual-level exhibition space. The artists have been studying together this year on Byam Shaw’s Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art. Their work demonstrates the experimentation, self-development and group dynamic that are key aspects of this prestigious course. The 21 artists come from Egypt, Spain, Portugal, Lebanon, Brazil, South Africa, New Zealand, Taiwan, USA, Eire, Wales and many other parts of the UK. |

The 3rd annual ISpy exhibition of prints and drawings by student of Middlesex University’s BA Hons Illustration course this year celebrates the hustle and bustle of London’s Covent Garden along with its less flamboyant, but no less intriguing neighbour Holborn. Last year over a hundred illustration students descended on Camden High Street, the year before Kilburn High Road got the Middlesex ISpy treatment - both shows scored a real hit with the public judging by crowds who attended and the many prints and drawings that found their way into living rooms across the capital. The ISpy Covent Garden and Holborn show aims to throw a spotlight on all aspects of the area; the famous landmarks, the obscure backwaters, the mundane and everyday, the exotic, eccentric and the down right crazy – something for everyone. All the drawings, etchings, dry points, linocuts and screen prints are for sale at prices that anyone can afford (unique Christmas presents perhaps?) and proceeds from the show go towards the costs of staging the annual degree show held every June at the Truman Brewery complex in Brick Lane. ISpy Covent Garden and Holborn promises to be a really exciting exhibition, a great cause to support and a unique opportunity to sample the work of tomorrow’s illustrators. |
