LOSING GROUND Exhibition dates
| Losing Ground brings together new works by Adrian Jeans and Andrew Hladky, both concerned with clichéd ways in which experiences get recorded and summed up. Working from proverbs and holiday photographs respectively, they aim to undermine the over-familiarity that this imagery can foster and to bring out the unexpected. In doing this they both make work which can’t easily be categorised as either drawing, painting or sculpture, blurring distinctions between them. Adrian’s drawings and relief sculptures play with the double meanings of proverbs and idiomatic expressions. By presenting these sayings out of context and in visual form he highlights the absurdity of them when taken literally. His relief sculptures combine a variety of drawing and modeling techniques and his drawings combine a variety of drawing and painting methods within each piece to question the clichéd nature of his own representational approach. Andrew paints from family photographs for the way they become sentimental objects, not just a visual record but a stand-in for memories. He pieces together elements from different photos into strange scenes of repeated sunsets and figures and multiple horizons, giving once nostalgic imagery a sinister edge. His paintings often become very sculptural. Tall ridges of paint, built over long periods of time using cocktail sticks, combine with paint straight from the tube. As a result the images change as you move round them, distorting or breaking down completely from the side. Adrian graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2001 and has since taught sculpture for two years at a Ghanaian University. Andrew graduated with an MA from Wimbledon School of Art in 2003 and shows regularly in London. |

Island Lesley Davy Exhibition dates 11th - 27th November 2005 LIGHT SCULPTURE, ORIGINAL PRINT, VIDEO |
| Lesley Davy is an artist who works with light through various media, such as light sculpture, light projection and blind embossed print. In Island Davy seeks to evidence the landscape of the emotions, by drawing together material in print and macro photography developed from her residencies in the Outer Hebrides and light sculptures produced in her London studio. The works on paper address the notion of ‘island’ as a psychological space and the light sculptures are read as emotional ‘barcodes’ – different emotions experienced through time. Together with light, Davy works with marks in the landscape on a macro and micro scale viewed from an aerial perspective. Davy completed her M.A. with distinction in Art in Architecture at the University of East London in 2000 and has produced many public art commissions including Urban Scan, a rotating light projection and applied floor media for the Economist Plaza, London, commissioned by Contemporary Art Society Projects in 2001. |
