Voyager - A series of new paintings
Brendan Murphy

Exhibition dates
28th May - 20th June 2004

Gallery open: Sat and Sun 12–6pm

It is curious how our motivation to explore is stimulated. For Brendan Murphy this excitement of exploration resides in the world beneath the skin. Just as the space-probe travels into space sending back images as it goes, the title of this exhibition, Voyager, implies it is concerned with a journey, a journey not with the aim of arrival but with the journey itself. In a similar way AJ Toynbee, the historian, suggests ‘Civilisation is a movement and not a condition; a voyage and not a harbour’ and as the French novelist L-F Celine felt, ‘…our own voyage is entirely imaginary and therein lies its force.’

From 7th until 30th May Brendan will be showing some of the results of his ongoing researches in a series of new haptic paintings which are both emphatic and enigmatic and will excite the viewer on a visual journey of stunning power.

Tree of Life
Community project with Polly Pollock and Josie Warshaw

Exhibition dates
5th - 12th July 2003

Gallery open
Sat and Sun 12–6pm

Kingsgate artists Polly Pollock, Josie Warshaw and education consultant, Olivia Burt have been working with local primary schools to create a flock of birds for the Tree of Life as part of National Children's Art Day and the Kilburn Festival. Beautiful, delicate birds are created from tissue paper and wire that reflect participants' personalities and added to the Tree of Life installation created by Polly and Josie. The aims of this project are to offer people the opportunity to participate in free arts activities, change people's lives through feeling a sense of involvement and value in the community, develop a platform to make art and present it to a wider audience.

This project has been made possible by generous support from the Arts Council of England
