Kingsgate Emerging Artist Residency

In its 4th year at Kingsgate Workshops Trust, and now with the support from Awards for All, Arts Council England, KWT Emerging Artist residency each year provides 3 recently graduating artists and craftspeople with a subsidised studio and programme of support. This includes offering a programme of mentorship and targeted opportunities, building upon artist’s confidence and competences within a professional environment and providing much needed networking opportunities. Recipients also receive a small bursary and opportunities to participate in a variety of KWT education activities.
Kingsgate Emerging Artist programme aims to
Provide space, time and resources for artists in the early stages of their career to support and develop their own practice.
Build artists confidence within professional environment
Establish and build upon existing artistic and audience opportunities within the London Borough of Camden, especially for those who have little access to, or experience of, contemporary visual arts.
Establish and maintain young and upcoming creative talent within North West London by providing opportunities to work and exhibit.
Taking up residence in Jan 2010 this year are Thomas Helyar-Cardwell, Amy Moffat and Oscar Murillo.
| Thomas Helyar-Cardwell graduated from Wimbledon College of Art receiving a MA in Fine Art painting in 2008, Thomas presents precious objects from a parallel reality, fanatic jewels and motifs heavy with nostalgia and symbolism. His painting and sculptures collect objects and decorations from historic genres such as the Baroque and Rococo, re-presenting them alongside icons of mass consumer culture. The resulting works often use mirroring and repetition to emphasise the unreality and artificiality of the creations, which are painted to falsely suggest precious metals. | |
| Amy Moffat graduated from Wimbledon College of Art receiving a BA in Fine Art painting in 2008. Amy's work is essentially about the act of making, painting are self-reflective in nature in an attempt to explore and perhaps understand the reality of the painter. Amy's work touches on uncertainty, instability, compulsion and obsession in making. The paintings, referencing art history, graphic media, film and the printed image act out the narratives of the role of the studio and the relationship between painter and canvas. | |
| Oscar Murillo graduated from University of Westminster in 2007 receiving a BA in Fine Art. Oscar work is influenced by architecture and the building blocks of a urban environment, materials such as cement, glass and everyday residue form the basis for his work. Oscar's practice literally suggests the idea of throwing all kinds of materials and ideas together within a hot-pot creation of sculptures and paintings. Oscar is interested in translating and amalgamating elements of construction onto an intimate studio scale where ideas of collapse, ruin and reforming come into play. | |
 | Kingsgate Workshops Trust would like to thank the Arts Council England for their generous support and contribution to the Kingsgate Emerging Artist Programme 2009 and 2010. |

Education

Running in tandem with the ongoing support we offer to our resident licensee artists and gallery exhibitors, Kingsgate Workshops Trust aims to deliver arts and crafts services to the local community and residents of the Boroughs of Camden and Brent. Where appropriate, we offer more specialist services to groups across London.
To this end, the Trust has successfully fundraised for and commissioned an Education Block which occupies its own discrete site adjacent to the KWT main building. Designed by the award-winning architects Adams and Sutherland, the Education Block is a valuable and well-utilised resource - offering participants the opportunity to engage in cultural activities in a beautiful, purpose-built arts and craft facility supported by an expert artist tutor team drawn from KWT's own licensee group and beyond. We are committed to developing participation in the arts and crafts in West Hampstead and Kilburn, Camden and pan-London, but we work with and offer opportunities to people beyond in a variety of ways including:
- Gallery shows, workshops and residencies presented at Kingsgate Workshops from across London and the UK
- Projects, exhibitions, workshops and events taking place with partners in other parts of London and the UK
- We offer opportunities for placements for artists, interns and students on exchange or on work programmes from across the world - and historically have offered at least two international internships to students following postgraduate study in arts subjects each year.
- Weekend courses for adults and children as well as after school programs
Please contact the Education and Gallery Manager at adam@kingsgateworkshops.org.uk to be placed on our mailing list for new weekend courses or to receive further details.

Education Priority Groups 2007-09
We offer a wide number of subscription courses in a range of disciplines and also actively seek to find funding to provide free-of-charge programmes, projects and one-off opportunities for people who would normally be excluded from cultural activities due to economic or social reasons. In addition to our core programme of free workshops, we have increased the number of bespoke programmes we offer in Kilburn and the wider Camden area. The Trust and its officers are also seeking funding to increase our programming for refugee groups, older people and young people at risk of offending and/or school exclusion.
Work with schools and organisations
Short- and long- term projects can be planned in line with curriculums and as fun activities to enliven the school programme. Our range of skills, combined with broad educational experience and professional artists, leads to high quality experience for the trainees.
