Statement I trained a basketmaker at London College of Furniture.
Basketry is a medium to work in that I really enjoy - I find the weaving process enormously satisfying. I have explored many materials and techniques but always return to dyed cane, and sometimes recycled materials.
Colour and pattern are the most important elements of my work. I have always been drawn to things around me which are colourful and patterned. My home and workshop are full of colourful things which inspire me : baskets, postcards, magazine pictures, plastic bags, bottle tops, fruit nets, piles of dyed cane, and simple handmade objects, especially when made from recycled materials and those made by my kids.
I divide my time between making baskets for exhibition and to commission, and teaching.
I work from my studio at Kingsgate Workshops Trust in NW London, where I am actively involved in their education programme. I have been teaching on the Basketry Courses at the City Lit in London for many years. I also teach basketry, and other workshop projects, using feltmaking and recycled materials in schools, colleges, museums, galleries and community centres.
