High Heels and No Knickers
Familiar and domestic objects inspire my work; beds, bathtubs and sofas are repossessed, translated, aggrandised. These objects have tied women to the hearth. We scrub them clean, and at times seek refuge inside them. My work examines the private places of women's lives. It embodies autobiographical events and sagas, my past and present, myself and other women. Each piece explores the relationship, and interaction between the human figure and the furniture that surrounds it. Pressure points are revealed by carving, exposing parts of the body, soft flesh and hard bone, where the figure lay and sank into the furniture. Shoes made of wood, oversized and with ridiculous heels, describe the shape and weight of the wearer...the invisible woman. The viewer is made aware of this human presence, this person who came and went leaving only a few clues. She haunts her environment.
